Many car owners do not have a repair shop they can trust. Without good references or research, customers often find themselves receiving unnecessary repair advice and overcharging. And, if the work isn’t backed up with a guarantee, they later find themselves with a vehicle that doesn’t function and an empty bank account. Take some precautions before giving the green light to someone to fix your vehicle. Follow five tips to ensure that you’re not victimized during your next visit to the auto shop:
Write a Damage Report
Write down all the symptoms your vehicle displayed and some information about the circumstances surrounding the breakdown. Note any strange noises, shudders, and any work that might have just been done to the car. (For example, if your car started “puttering” after changing an air filter, write that down).
Research the Problem
Avoid being misled by an unscrupulous mechanic. Do some advance online research about the problem you’re experiencing. Look on Google and get an idea of what you should pay for repairs. Join online forums and ask other people what they paid for similar jobs, and if they recommend any reputable repair shops.
Get a Second and Third Opinion
It is always best to get more than one opinion on auto repair options. Three opinions will help you to make the right decision about which company should do the work. Again, look online, and ask friends, co-workers, and family members for recommendations.
Research the Company
Research any company you plan to hire. Look at their consumer reviews, history, certification, and other credentials. Consumer reviews will often tell you if you should be leery of the work done by a place.
Take Someone With You
Two heads are better than one. Take a friend who’s knowledgeable about vehicle repair, or a “burly” relative. Scam artists are less likely to try to lie to two or more people.
